Bengaluru, Karnataka, INDIA: A suspected case of unnatural death has now been confirmed as a homicide, thanks to the persistent efforts of the victim’s wife, whose personal investigation led Bengaluru police to uncover the truth behind her husband's mysterious disappearance and death.
The body of 36-year-old Vikas Bahaddur Bista was discovered on May 10 in a highly decomposed state in a stormwater drain near Varthur in East Bengaluru. Initially classified as an "unnatural death under suspicious circumstances," the case took a dramatic turn after Bista’s wife, Sushma Gurang, launched her own inquiries following his disappearance.
According to police, Bista had been missing for 10 days before his body was recovered. Although his wife recognized the remains, no formal complaint was lodged at the time, as Bista was known to leave home frequently for work-related travel lasting up to two weeks.
Authorities registered a preliminary report and awaited the postmortem results. However, Sushma, increasingly unsettled by the circumstances, began speaking to Bista’s friends and contacts to piece together his final days.
Her persistence paid off when, on June 9, a friend informed her that Bista’s cousin—also named Vikas Bahaddur—had privately confessed to murdering him. Acting swiftly, Sushma filed a formal police complaint the following day.
Police arrested the 25-year-old cousin from his residence in Varthur on June 11. According to investigators, the crime occurred in the first week of May when both men were drinking together at home. Tensions reportedly escalated after Bista allegedly assaulted his wife. Vikas intervened, but the argument reignited hours later while Sushma was asleep. In a fit of rage, the cousin struck Bista with a metal rod and later disposed of the body in a nearby drain.
Police commended Sushma’s determination, which ultimately brought the perpetrator to justice. Investigators say that without her initiative, the case may have remained unsolved for much longer.
The accused remains in custody, and further investigations are underway.
