Mother and teen lover arrested for rape and murder of 2-year-old

Mumbai, INDIA: In a deeply disturbing case, police in Mumbai have arrested a 30-year-old woman and her 19-year-old paramour for the alleged rape and murder of the woman's two-and-a-half-year-old daughter in Malvani on May 18, 2025.

According to police sources, the teenage accused reportedly expressed a desire to engage in a sexual act with the toddler. Shockingly, the mother is believed to have permitted the act. The child was allegedly assaulted in her presence. When the child began crying in pain, the teenager allegedly smothered her with a pillow, causing her to lose consciousness.

The woman took the unconscious child to a hospital in Jankalyan Nagar, claiming she had suffered an epileptic fit. However, doctors found injuries consistent with sexual assault and alerted the police.

"The mother attempted to mislead medical staff, but the autopsy later confirmed sexual assault and death due to smothering," a police official said. "Both were taken into custody following the medical report."

Investigations suggest that the mother may have been complicit in the crime. Police allege that she even assisted the teen during the assault. Officers believe the two may have viewed the child, born from the woman’s previous marriage, as an obstacle.

The woman had been living alone after her husband abandoned her during her pregnancy. She met the teenage accused a few months ago, and the two entered into a relationship. Neither of the accused is employed. The woman’s elderly mother, who works as a domestic worker, has been supporting the household, while the teenager depends on his father's income as a labourer.

A case has been registered under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of rape, murder, and destruction of evidence, along with multiple provisions under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Both suspects remain in police custody as the investigation continues.
