Gaya, Bihar, INDIA: A man in India’s eastern state of Bihar allegedly strangled his wife to death over a dispute involving ₹10,000 (approximately USD 120), in an incident witnessed by their six-year-old son, police said on Thursday, May 22.

The crime occurred late Wednesday May 21 night in Juri Nawadih village, located in the Banke Bazar police jurisdiction of Gaya district. The police have identified the victim as 35-year-old Sushila Devi, the wife of Vinay Chandravanshi.

According to the police, the dispute was reportedly triggered after Sushila gave ₹10,000 to her elder sister following a family mourning ceremony, which concluded just a day earlier. The money was offered as financial help when her sister departed the village after attending the Brahmbhoj ritual, traditionally held after a family member's death. Sushila’s mother-in-law had recently passed away.

The couple’s minor son told police that he witnessed his father strangling his mother during a confrontation later that night.

Local authorities arrived at the scene Thursday morning and transferred the body to Magadh Medical College and Hospital for post-mortem examination. Ram Iqbal Yadav, the officer-in-charge of Banke Bazar Police Station, confirmed that a formal investigation is underway and further action will depend on the autopsy report.

Family members from the maternal side of the deceased have since reached the village, and the community is reportedly in mourning. Sushila Devi is survived by three young children — two daughters and a son.
