Irapuato, MEXICO: Authorities in central Mexico have uncovered a mass grave containing 17 bodies in an abandoned residence in Irapuato, a city in the violence-stricken state of Guanajuato.
The gruesome discovery was made during a coordinated operation by state prosecutors, who utilised ground-penetrating radar and specially trained cadaver dogs to search the property. Officials confirmed on Monday evening that five of the bodies have been identified as individuals who had previously been reported missing. Efforts are on-going to identify the remaining victims.
Guanajuato, despite being an economic hub with flourishing industries and tourist destinations, has emerged as Mexico’s most violent state. Rivalries between organised crime syndicates—primarily the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel and the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG)—have fuelled a wave of killings, kidnappings, and disappearances in the region, say the authorities.
The state recorded over 3,000 homicides last year, the highest of any region in the country, according to official government data. Nationwide, more than 480,000 people have been killed since 2006 in violence linked to organised crime, with over 120,000 reported missing—underscoring the scale of Mexico’s on-going security and humanitarian crisis.
Authorities say the investigation into the latest discovery remains active, with forensic experts working to establish connections between the victims and on-going criminal cases.
