Chopda, Maharashtra – In a horrendous case of honour killing, a retired Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Police Sub-Inspector (PSI) allegedly shot and killed his daughter and critically injured his son-in-law during a family wedding in Chopda, a city in Maharashtra’s Jalgaon district.

The accused, identified as Kiran Mangle, reportedly opened fire late on April 26 after spotting his daughter, Tripti and her husband Avinash Wagh, at a wedding ceremony. Tripti, who had married Avinash against her father's wishes a year ago, died on the spot from gunshot wounds. Avinash sustained serious injuries and remains in critical condition.

Witnesses at the scene stated that Mangle used his licensed firearm to carry out the attack. Panic erupted inside the wedding venue as shots rang out, leaving guests in shock. Reports indicate that a third individual, a woman, was also injured in the crossfire.

Following the incident, enraged attendees subdued and assaulted Mangle before handing him over to police. Both the retired officer and the injured Avinash were rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Jalgaon for treatment. Mangle is currently under police custody while receiving medical care.

Jalgaon Superintendent of Police Dr. Maheshwar Reddy visited the scene and confirmed that a case of murder and attempted murder has been registered against Mangle. Authorities are treating the attack as a case of honour killing.

Tripti and Avinash had been residing in Pune since their marriage, reportedly living peacefully despite familial opposition. Their return to Chopda for the wedding tragically ended in violence, underlining the persistent threat of honour-based crimes in parts of India.

The killing has triggered outrage in Chopda, with calls for swift justice and renewed attention to combating deep-rooted social prejudices that continue to fuel honour killings.

The police are conducting further probe into the case.
