KOLKATA, INDIA– In a deeply disturbing case that has left residents of Vedic Village in shock, a 33-year-old man was arrested on Friday morning for allegedly murdering his mother and spending the night beside her body before revealing the crime to a local tea vendor.

Soumik Majumdar, a former BPO employee reportedly undergoing treatment for depression, is accused of fatally stabbing his 58-year-old mother, Debjani Majumdar, following a heated altercation late April 10  night at their flat in Rajarhat's Greentech City residential complex.

The crime came to light around 8 am on April 11, when a disoriented Soumik approached a tea stall and made a chilling statement: “I’ve killed my mother. I haven’t eaten all night. Do you have any food?” His trembling hands and vacant stare alarmed the tea vendor, Rabin Biswas, who immediately informed the complex’s security personnel.

Security guards forced their way into the apartment, only to find a grisly scene. Blood stained the floor, and Debjani lay lifeless with multiple stab wounds to her neck and shoulder. A deep injury to the back of her head suggested she had been violently thrown to the floor. Police also found a bloodied chair and evidence of a prolonged struggle.

Investigators believe the murder occurred between 11 pm and midnight. Initial evidence suggests Soumik attempted to pass off the killing as a suicide by placing the weapon beside his mother and tending to his own injuries. However, his erratic confession the next morning led to his immediate arrest.

Ironically, residents say Soumik had previously made bizarre, unreal claims like “I’ve killed my mother,” only for Debjani to be seen alive later, leading many to dismiss his behavior as attention-seeking. “We never imagined it would actually happen,” said Abdul Rashid, a neighbour.

The Majumdar family originally hailed from Santoshpur and moved to Vedic Village in 2021 following the death of Soumik’s father, Soumendra Majumdar. Since then, mother and son had lived together in the flat purchased by the late patriarch.

Soumik had reportedly been unemployed for over a year and was struggling with both mental health and financial issues. Neighbours revealed he often asked for money or food and had defaulted on electricity and maintenance payments in recent months.

“This appears to be a case of mental breakdown leading to extreme violence,” said a senior investigating officer. “The victim may have tried to escape, but was overpowered. We are treating this as a complex case involving mental illness, though all other angles are also being examined.”

Following his arrest, Soumik later retracted his confession during interrogation, denying the murder altogether. He has been remanded to judicial custody pending further investigation.

As the police delve deeper into the case, the tragedy underscores the dire consequences of untreated mental health issues and the importance of early intervention and community awareness.
