TIRUPPUR, INDIA – In a shocking incident, a 27-year-old woman from Odisha was sexually assaulted at knifepoint in front of her husband by three men at Tiruppur in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The despicable crime took place on 17 February 2025 night, and the accused were arrested by the Tiruppur North all-woman police on 18 February night.

The victim, who had travelled to Tiruppur with her husband and three-year-old child in search of employment in the city's thriving textile industry, was lured by three men under the pretence of offering shelter and job. The accused, identified as Mohammad Nadim, 24, Mohammad Danish, 25, and Mohammed Murshith, 20, are migrant workers from Bihar.

According to police reports, the family arrived at Pushpa Junction near Tiruppur railway station, uncertain of where to go, when they were approached by the trio. The suspects promised them work at a garment factory and took them to their rented room in Lakshmi Nagar, where they offered the couple a place to stay for the night.

Later that night, the assailants launched their brutal attack. The woman’s husband was overpowered and tied up, while the perpetrators threatened the couple with a knife before sexually assaulting the woman. They also issued death threats to silence the victims.

Despite the threats, the couple courageously reported the crime to the Tiruppur North all-woman police station on 18 February. Authorities swiftly acted, arresting the accused the same night. The three men were produced before a judicial magistrate and remanded in custody at Coimbatore Central Prison.

The rape survivor is currently receiving medical care at the Tiruppur Government Medical College and Hospital. The case has reignited concerns over the safety of migrant workers and the need for stronger measures to protect vulnerable communities in industrial hubs like Tiruppur.

This heinous crime underscores the urgent need for better protection of women and families seeking livelihoods in India's industrial corridors. The investigation is on-going, and further legal proceedings are expected in the coming days.
