Even as the state of Kerala in India is reeling under the after-effects of torrential rainfall and flooding which has claimed many lives, a head-on collision between a state public transport bus and a goods lorry on August 13, added to the sad turn of tragic events in the state.

In this mishap, three people – the diver and conductor of the bus, and the lorry driver – were killed, while 30 passengers on the bus sustained minor injuries.

The tragic incident has been caught on the CCTV of a shop located near the accident site under Chathannur police jurisdiction of Kollam city.

The Kerala Road Transport Corporation (KRTC) bus was headed to Thiruvananthapuram – the state capital, while the lorry was going to Ernakulam.

“The incident took place a few minutes after 6 in the morning after the bus had crossed the bridge on the Ithikkara River. The CCTV footage from a nearby shop shows the bus suddenly crossing onto the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the lorry. Three people died in this accident. They are the truck driver Ganesh, KRTC bus driver Abdul Azeez and the bus conductor T P Subhash,” informed Chathannur Assistant Commissioner Hiralal.

Luckily, the 30 passengers on the bus had a narrow escape, sustaining minor injuries, and were rushed to the Kollam District Hospital, Kottiyam Holy Cross Hospital and KIMS Hospital for treatment and discharged later.

The police surmise that the bus driver dozed off on the wheel leading to the mishap.
