"Car passengers make a lucky escape from flood fury"

"Car passengers make a lucky escape from flood fury"

Sumesh RajanMumbai: July 31, 2018

Four passengers in a car had a lucky escape barely seconds before their vehicle is washed away in a sudden ravaging flood in India, on July 30 evening.

The incident took place at Shivpuri Colony in Haldwani town of Uttarakhand state.

“It rained continuously for about two and a half hours, following which rainwater rushed down from the forest slope in the nearby mountain. Around 5 pm, the water flowing along the culvert in Shivpuri suddenly turned into a ravaging flood and entered the road alongside, sweeping away everything on its path. Two cars – with four passengers in one car which was on the move -- and an empty parked autorickshaw had got stuck in the swift-flowing waters,” said local resident Dharmendra Phartiyal, owner of an electrical shop nearby.

In a video recorded by a bystander on his mobile phone, people can be heard shouting to the stuck passengers to exit from their vehicle before it is swept away.

The flood fury had slammed the cars together from one side and the forceful waters making it impossible to open the doors from the other side. However, the presence of the mind makes one passenger clamber out from the window of the car, then hop on top of the next car and jump onto the autorickshaw to save his life. He is immediately followed by his three other co-passengers. And just as the last man exits from the car window, the car plunges into the ravaging water.

All four of them have a lucky escape, even as the second car is slowly pulled into the swirling waters and is followed by the autorickshaw. The onlookers ask the lucky four to retreat back as the water current picks up.

The swept away cars are found a few kilometres downstream stuck on gravels and rocks in a mangled condition.
