Doctors save man pierced in a freak accident by 5-feet long rod through the neck

    Sagaya Fernando Mumbai: 6 November 22   A team of doctors at Apollo Multispecialty hospital in Triuchirappalli, Tamil Nadu, India, saved the life of a 33-years-old man whose neck was pierced through by a feet long iron rod.   Karthikeyan, a resident of Ariyamangalam in the city, was watering the concrete slabs on the first floor of his under-construction house when he accidentally slipped and fell 15 to 20 feet down, on October 15. As he fell, a 5 feet long iron rod with serrated edges pierced through his neck and came out from the back.   “Within fifteen minutes of the mishap, his relatives rushed him to our hospital which is in close vicinity,” informed Apollo Multispecialty Hospital, Triuchirappalli, Consultant General, Laparoscopic and Bariatric Surgeon Dr Mohamed Mansoor, who led the operating team.   “On evaluation in emergency, it was seen that he had a 5 feet long iron rod penetrating into the anterior aspect of neck and exiting the posterior aspect of neck.

In an incredible feat, a team of doctors at College of Medicine and Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial (JNM) Hospital in Kalyani town of West Bengal state, India, removed over 35 kilograms of ovarian tumours from a 60-year-old woman in a life-saving operation.

“The patient – Arati Adhikary, a resident of Kanchrapara town in North 24 Parganas District was brought to us 10 days ago with a bloated stomach and complaint of severe abdominal pain. On conducting an ultrasound scan and other preliminary procedures, a huge mass was discovered extending from the pubis,” informed Dr. Mriganka Mouli Saha, Gynaecological Surgeon at JNM Hospital, who led the surgical team.

“The tumours had taken up 80 per cent of her abdomen and was pressing her intestines, liver and diaphragm, causing her breathing problems,” said Dr. Saha.

He further added, “On July 28, we removed two tumours in an operation that required considerable skill and patience. The surgery lasted more than two hours.”

“The tumours together weighed 35.45 kgs. Tumour of this size has not been operated successfully in India in the recent past,” said Dr. Saha.

The patient is stable and under observation for two days, he added.
